Formed by Sorca McGrath and Simon Cullen (aka Lasertom), Irish duo Ships made first waves at home with their sparkling synth pop anthem “You’re Gonna Feel It” in 2012, before garnering even more domestic praise with the more refined and subtle follow-up single “Places”. The song’s release also marked the beginning of the recording process for Ships’ forthcoming debut full-length, but before that one is going to see the light of day, the two put out their “Space Inside” b/w “None Of It Real” as a 7” on Berlin-based imprint Stratosfear. The a-side is a dazzling electro boogie killer, sporting an irresistible groove that not only thanks to its interspersed cowbells and handclaps hints at classic 70s disco as well as every splendid dance revival of the last decade, while never letting its understated retro charm get in the way of cheerful, clever girl/boy vocal alternation. Slightly off the mark compared to the rest of Ships’ new material but “simply too fun to ignore” in the words of the musicians, “Space Inside” is tailor-made to come out on a 7” single. The flip-side, “None Of It Real” strikes a different tone, arriving at a more mellow and calm temper, with a more restrained synth instrumentation that leaves more space for McGrath’s impressive voice to unfold.
